Final Essay: Issue Paper (option #2)

Social Classes and Feminism in Society
Social classes in the 1800s were very different from how they are now. Back then, there were classes such as, the poor, the working class, the middle class, the upper class, and then royalty. There were not really any ways to gain a higher social status, unless one was married into a higher class. For women, marrying a man in a higher social class is expected, but a woman marrying a man from a lower class was frowned upon, and in some cases and countries, it was illegal. I personally think that the idea of not being allowed to love someone in a lower class is ridiculous and morally wrong. People should have been allowed to love whoever they wanted to, and not who their parents happened to pick out for them.
One of the main reasons that social classes existed was because people that had more money saw themselves as better than others. The classes were formed based on the people’s inequality. Inequalities such as the following: money, authority, power, working and living conditions, education, religion, clothing, and culture. They flaunted their money and power and authority and everything like it was a huge deal, and something to be deeply desired, and then because everyone wanted to be better than the people around them, they all tried to get more, and eventually the social classes were formed. The classes greatly affected the working people, families, and politics in many different and similar ways.
The people in the working classes tended to stay out of all of the political matters. They felt that it was not necessary to get involved in matters that did not concern them and their families. However, they became hostile towards people in the middle and upper classes, and to the aristocrats. They saw the people in these groups as selfish, ungrateful, spoiled, and lazy, whereas the people in the working class saw themselves as extremely hard working, honest and loyal.
In the 1800s, women were expected to marry a man that had a lot of money. In other words, they were supposed to marry a man in a higher class. Also, the man that the woman was to marry was handpicked out for her by her parents, and most of the time the woman did not grow to love the man. She married him out of duty to her family. Time and again, the men did not treat the women as women. Men would tend to see women as trophies, targets or prizes to be acquired, especially if many men were after her. They would court her. To court someone is to try to win the favor, preference, or goodwill of another person, or their family. They would try to get her father to choose him to marry her. Once they had her, they would often treat her poorly, abuse her, or ignore her.
In 1836 a man named Robert Browning wrote the poem Porphyria’s Lover.  The poem is about a woman in an upper level social class that fell in love with a man from the working class. They love each other, but because of how their society is they cannot be together. They have to sneak around and hide from everyone to see each other. In the middle of the night during an intense storm, Porphyria comes to her lover’s home. She is covered in a long, dark, black cloak and dark shawl, her long, honey, blonde hair is pinned up, and she is wearing dark, soiled gloves so that no one who knows her will recognize her should she had been seen. She takes off her wet clothes, lays them on the floor, and lets her long, beautiful hair down, and walks over to her lover. She calls his name a few times, but he remains motionless to the soft, sound of her voice. To gain his attention she bares her shoulder, pulling her dress down a little further, and leans her head against him. They stay like that for a moment, just basking in each other’s presence. Thinking to himself about how easy it would be for them to be together if the classes did not exist, he takes all of her long, blonde, beautiful hair in his hand. He takes her hair and wraps is around her pale, delicate throat three times, pulls it tight, and strangles her. He lets loose her hair, and when he kisses her cheek, her face flushes red again. He leans his lover against his shoulder again and props up her head like she was before, and he stays like that. He is now going to be with his lover forever, and has beaten the social class laws and regulations. It is agreeable to say that this poem is very sad. Although Porphyria’s lover ends up killing her, it shows just how much he loves her, and how much he is willing to do to be able to be with her forever. He was willing to take her life so that they could love each other.
Because of the social classes, and the way that the world viewed women, traditional gender roles came into play, and later in society they began to be challenged. Women were always viewed to be the weaker sex. They were always seen as the ones that were supposed to take care of the house and watch the children and do all of the cooking so that the man of the house could come home and relax. The men were viewed as the stronger sex. They were seen as the ones that were supposed to be in charge of the home, go out and work, and bring in an income to support the family. Women finally discovered that they were being treated poorly and unfairly. This discovery brought on feminism. “Feminism is the radical notion that women are people.” (Cheris Kramarae and Paula Treichler) Women began to try to make themselves equal to men. In the 1920s girls began to wear shorter shirts that went to just below their knees, they cut their hair short like men, and started smoking. They wanted to prove to the world that women can do almost anything and everything that a man can do. These women eventually earned the nickname “flapper girls” or “flappers”. The flappers brought new understanding to feminism. Women began to expand their educations so that they could bring in a fair income as well. They looked for jobs outside of their homes, and hired other women to watch their kids. From the 1920s up until the present, women in society, and even men in society have challenged their traditional gender roles.
I think that the gender roles being challenged helped the United States grow into the nation that it is today. Without feminism, women would be hiding away in their homes doing what they were told. Women have had to prove themselves to the world, and have had to work twice as hard to be accepted into the world. “Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, "She doesn't have what it takes." They will say, "Women don't have what it takes." Clare Boothe Luce makes an incredible point with this quote. A lot of the time if a female makes a mistake, society does not point it out as being that persons mistake, or that person not having the ability to accomplish the task, society points it out as it being women’s mistake, or women not having the ability to accomplish the given task. Society tends to bunch up the group as a whole, and does not portray women as individual people. We as women are singled out, not as equal people, but as something to achieve and look at. We were ridiculed if we were ambitious, and were punished if we spoke our minds.
In today’s society, however, women are some of our nation’s most important people. They are firefighters, cops, marines, doctors, and surgeons. Women lead in the military, and are sometimes a stay at home mama. They are some of the strongest people in the world just because they had the courage, determination and will to stand up for equality and justice.
“Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and that if we venture out, we will fall off the edge.” (Andrea Dworkin) women have achieved such incredible things throughout  history. We have learned that we can do just about anything and everything we set our minds to, and that we can be anything and everything that we want to be. All it takes is a little courage and the strength to know what is right and what is wrong.  To be able to make a stand and show the world what you are made of. The traditional gender roles and social classes do not show the world what women are capable of, but history does, and what we truly are capable of, is absolutely amazing.

Option 3 Essay

Son of Man and the Secret
In The Secret Revealed, Gandhi says, “A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” (11) If a man focuses on what he desires in a positive manner, eventually he will receive it. The lecture says that the Universe is basically a big holding basket. It will accommodate itself to your need. If you are focusing on what you do not want, then the universe will attract it to you. However, if you focus on what you do want, the same thing will happen. You will attract what you want to you. In the Disney movie, Tarzan, an orphan boy is taken in by a mother gorilla that has recently lost her own baby. As he grows up, all Tarzan wants to do is to fit in with the rest of the gorillas in the troop. Because this is what he focuses on, Tarzan is able to prove himself to the troop leader Kerchak, and is accepted as the troop’s new leader. Tarzan stayed positively focused on what he really wanted, just like The Secret tells us to do if we are to truly achieve something that we desire. Positive, determined thoughts will give positive results. As you read, this essay will show the connections between the movie and The Secret through the main character, Tarzan, the movie’s plot, and a song directly from the movie. I will show you the importance of details from The Secret, as well as the movie, for your day to day life where positive, encouraging thinking is involved.
Tarzan, wanting nothing more than to fit in with the other gorilla troop’s children, attempts a dare, challenged by his cousin Terk, to win their approval. He has to try to get a hair from the tail of an elephant. In doing so, Tarzan causes a stampede even though he succeeds in getting the hair. The stampede makes the troop leader Kerchak absolutely furious because Tarzan could have seriously hurt, or even killed one of them. Kala begs him to give Tarzan another chance, but Kerchak says, “He will never learn. You can’t learn to be one of us! Kala, look at him! He will never be one of us!”
Kerchak’s comment really hurts Tarzan. He runs away, and later that night Kala finds him by a river. Tarzan, full of frustration and anger, asks his mother why he is so different. She shows him that he has two eyes, a nose, two ears, two hands, and a beating heart just like she does. “See,” she tells him, “we’re exactly the same. Kerchak just can’t see that.” Tarzan is now full of determination to prove himself to Kerchak. “Then I’ll make him see it. I’ll be the best ape ever!”

One of the featured songs in the movie is Son of Man written by Phil Collins. The lyrics describe that there is a journey to be taken, and that there will be questions that you will need answered. “Oh, and all the things you dreamed of The visions that you saw Well, the time is drawing near now It's yours to claim it all” Just like the song says, and the Secret as well, you can easily achieve your dreams when you are ready. All it takes is a positive thought and a little determination. Einstein says, “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” With a negative attitude, or with negative thoughts, you will not be able to get where you want to be. You will not be able to play the game. Although, if you learn the way the world works, and you learn how the Secret works for you personally, you can play the game in any way you want to the point of where you play better than anyone else.

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” (Winston Churchill) Having a negative, or pessimistic, outlook on life will bring you down.  The bad or hurtful things you think about will begin to come to you in waves that will be hard to handle. If you have a positive or optimistic outlook on life, the result will be the opposite. You will attract the things you truly desire. “The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.” Everything in your life happens for a reason. Whether it is what you attract into your life, or what others attract into it, everything happens for a distinct reason. “You've done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.

Before the movie Tarzan was made, Walt Disney had a dream. Obvious or not, he did use the Secret. He used a strong, positive way of thinking to get what and where he wanted. Walt Disney said, “Somehow I can’t believe there are any heights that can’t be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C’s. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.” Walt Disney believed that anything and everything is possible. He believed in a world of imagination and opportunity, and he used every part of it to his advantage.
Tarzan stayed positively focused on what he really wanted, just like The Secret tells us to do if we are to truly achieve something that we desire. Positive, determined thoughts will give positive results. He did everything he could to get what he wanted, and in the end he did. He earned the love and trust of the troop’s leader, and was accepted. Positive thoughts will always get you farther in your life than negative pessimistic ones. Believe in imagination, and believe in the opportunity that the world can give you. Use everything you can to your advantage, and anything and everything you do will be fabulous. Remember, “There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.

To whom it may concern:

I wish to apply to the University of Northern Colorado. I have maintained an academic GPA of 2.7 throughout high school, taken three years of Spanish, and have done work for my community, as well as demonstrated leadership through sports and extracurricular activities outside of school. Every December I have volunteered at the Samaritains Purse, helping package boxes of Christmas presents for Operation Christmas Child. All of the shoe-box gifts are shipped with missionaries to poor countries to children who have nothing. I have also been on the highschool volleyball team for three years.

My family has never had a lot of money. Yes, we can provide for ourselves, but we are not able to provide the money for me to attend college. In the future I hope to be able to sell books that I have written, or to be an art instructor in a public high school. Recieving a scholarship from the University of Northern Colorado would make the cost of an education lower, and my goals easier and more possible to achieve.

I will graduate from Roosevelt High School in May of 2012, and I hope to study Liberal Arts, Graphic Arts, and Foreign Languages in college. Along with volunteer work and volleyball, I also participated in Concert Choir every year of school, and Theatre for one year. Both of these demanded extra time outside of my classes with time after school, and on weekends.

While being a student at Roosevelt High School, I worked for my aunt as her babysitter as well as her house keeper. this required me to occasionally watch her children late into the night. With this I have maintained a 2.7 GPA as well as participating in extracurricular activities. I am not currently employed, but am looking for work. Over spring break, and my other breaks from school, I worked for Rhona Fitch at Alpine ENT as a file clerk. This provided me with knowledge of organization, as well as how an office is to be run. From this experience, I also learned how to keep others in the office organized, and furthered my communication skills.  I can be reached at 970-587-0254 or b0bblehead14@q.com. Thank you for your time and consideration, and thank you for helping and providing an education for young, driven students.

sincerely,

Achievement scholarship

Achievements Scholarship
I have not achieved very many academic awards. However, I have achieved awards for things that are very important to me. In tenth grade I made captain for the Resurrection Christian High School junior varsity volleyball team. That in itself was a great accomplishment, and was truly amazing. At the end of the season I was given the Sacrifice award, and the Leadership award. I always pushed my team to be the best that they could be, and I was one of the only people constantly willing to sacrifice my body for the good of the game.
Honor roll is also an achievement that shows drive and ambition. I have been on honor roll every year for as long as I can remember. I also know where I want to go to college, what I want to study, and what I want to do with my life after I graduate. I want to major in literature, and English liberal arts so that I can become a writer. I want to be able to change people’s lives with the written word the way that it changed mine.
I am always respectful to those around me, and I try to always respect my family even when it is difficult. I always try to be someone that they can rely on. My family is all I have, and they are the most important thing in my life. We drive each other crazy, but we love each other, and they are all I have. Without them I am nothing, and I have nothing.

Alert Scholarship Essay

Alert Scholarship
My sophomore year of high school I was really good friends with this girl named Cassie. She was my best friend, and my sister. We were that close. Our parents used to say that we were twins that had been separated at birth, or that we should be joined at the hip. At the beginning of tenth grade we became friends with two boys who were new at our school; Dan and Andrew. The four of us did almost everything together.
Throughout that year Cassie became very rebellious. She would sneak out of her house at night to go drink with Dan and hang out. This made Andrew and I very uncomfortable. By the end of the year, it was like Cassie was a completely different person because of her behavior.  Then, over the summer, Cass decided to try pot, and she got hooked on it. I didn’t know what to do so I went to her dad. As far as I know he grounded her from everything for a very long time. He also told me that it explained why his daughter seemed to have had a complete personality change, that I did the right thing, and he thanked me for looking out for her. After that Cassie and Dan wouldn’t talk to me, and were furious with me for being a “snitch”.
I think that the situation was dealt with correctly. Going to a person’s parents with things like this is always the right thing to do if you are looking out for their well-being. One thing that I learned from this is how to stand up for myself, and the way I was raised, and for what I believe in. also, that no matter what, we have to do the right thing, even if that means making an unpopular decision. This experience taught me that it is better to have people hate me for caring about them, and looking out for them, than it is to have them love me and throw their lives in the gutter. So remember, always do the right thing, because in the long run they will thank you for it.

Passion Deffinition Essay

Passion
Passion is a very powerful thing that almost anyone can possess. It can be anything from making an opinion known, or to taking part in something worth caring about. It is pursuing dreams, or caring about a national problem. Passion can be seen, heard, and felt in everything, whether it is a musician writing a new song, an artist creating a new piece, or a student shutting down an abortion clinic. For some, passion is tangible evidence that what they care about is actually real. Others, it is simply standing out in a crowd. “Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.” (Hardy D. Jackson) Passion is stepping back, and putting ones whole heart into what they care about.
The dictionary describes passion as any powerful or compelling emotion such as love or hate, enthusiasm, or depression. To me, I believe that passion is taking a stand on something I believe is right or wrong, and going after my dreams. The definition the dictionary gives, I feel, is not deep enough. Words cannot completely describe the feeling that I, myself, get when I am passionate about something. My sophomore year of high school, we were studying the laws the United States created involving abortion. I knew in my gut and in my heart that abortion is wrong, no matter the circumstance. I was one of three people out of thirty students that were against the topic. Because I was so strongly against it, I had the drive to find and create as many arguments as possible to win the debate. My main point was, “the United States puts people in jail for murder. Abortion is the murder of an unborn, BUT LIVING, child. If we look at an ultrasound we can see and hear the child’s heartbeat. How can the government condone the murder of someone grown versus someone who hasn’t even had the chance to live his or her life? Taking that life is giving someone else the authority to take a life. We have NO right to do either.” That argument helped me win against twenty-nine other students.
Another way that I have demonstrated passion is through my artwork, writing, and my music. Writing, music, and art have always been outlets for me. When I am upset or angry I let writing take the emotion out of me and onto paper. I let the harmony from guitar chords and song lyrics show others how I am feeling. I let the way lines from a pencil move on paper express my feelings, and speak in a way that my mouth cannot. Artwork, music, and writing have always been three things I have cared the most about. I let people see me through the passion in my words and lyrics, and the artwork I create. “What is a sketch but a moment's passion, searching for the truth?” (Stephen Aitkin) When I get passionate about something that I am writing, or a piece I am working on it is where all of my attention goes. Until it is complete it feels like a stomach ache, but when it is finished the feeling is amazing.  It feels like a breath of fresh air after being underwater for a long time, like the fire of a first kiss, or the magic of saying “I love you” for the first time. It is a NEW and wonderful feeling.
Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting... and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love... the clarity of hatred... and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we'd know some kind of peace... but we would be hollow... Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we'd be truly dead.” (Josh Whedon). Without passion our lives would be empty and cold. We would be lifeless. No matter how small, passion exists in every single person whether they want it there or not; everyone has something they truly and completely care about. Whether it is a thing, a hobby, an argument, or a person, we all care about something. Our passion is what helps make us who we are. Our pain, our love, our hatred, our trust, and our hurt are what fuels our thirst and need for life…for passion. Within everything and everyone, there is a need and a want. There is always an ongoing battle inside someone to do the best they can for something, or someone. One of my favorite bands is 12 Stones. They have a song called “It Was You”, that I think speaks very clearly on this topic. “I was sick of all the pain, Tired of all the shame that I felt, But you showed me a way, To never have a doubt, And always to believe in myself, Now I see, It was you, That showed me who I am, And taught me how to stand, For what I know is real. Now I'm breathing for the first time, and I'm leaving, all this behind, I've become, what I am because of you, It was you.” To me these lyrics spoke about having someone show you what passion truly is; the need to discover yourself and to know that someone there is caring about you. No matter what a person is going through, they can always find something to get them through the pain and hurt or anything else that they are dealing with. I found that through my writing, music and my artwork.
So when people ask what someone is passionate about, don’t be afraid to tell them! Tell them what passion is, or show them!  It is not something to be afraid, ashamed of, or to be shied away from. Passion exists in everything! It exists in the first breath of a newborn, a touch, and a word. Passion is beautiful, and everything has its own unique, unquestionable beauty. Passion is a having a voice. Speak out! Be known! Don’t be afraid to stand out! A voice can be one of the most powerful things in this world, but no one is willing to use it. Stand out in the crowd! Use a voice and be passionate.

RHS Alumni Scholarship Application Paper

The future is a completely undefinable thing. It changes with age and decisions and time. When we were little our parents and teachers would ask us what we wanted to be when we were older. We would tell them things like policeman, firefighter, artist, and rockstar, but now that we are older and we actually have to give them a serious answer, we have to decide. We have to know what we want to do, and how we are going to do it. We have to know exactly how we are going to achieve our dreams. So here is my answer. I want to be a writer.
The written word is a very powerful thing, and I know that I can make a difference with it. I want to study literature, poetry, and creative writing so that I can make an impact in people's lives, and I am willing to do what it takes to get there. I want poetry and literature to speak to other people the way that it has spoken to me.  I am going to improve my GPA by re-taking classes my senior year to get into college. I am going to work my way through school, and do the best that I can in my classes. I will take as many English, literature, poetry, and writing classes as I can to get where I need to be with my writing to get published. I will major in English Literature, Poetry, and Writing, and get a teaching degree while I write at home. I will teach and work as hard as I can to get my work published, and even if I cant I can still change people by teaching. I would do anything to get my work published and out in the world, and I would do anything with my writing to change other's lives.
